At the center of the tornado lies absolute calm—a state of stillness. The listener is metaphorically positioned at this center, observing the dynamic movement of the wind swirling around them.
The foundation of the work is a 10-second recording of the magnetic field vibrations from the motor of a 3D printer creating a porcelain tornado-shaped pyramid. These vibrations, imperceptible to the human ear, were captured using a custom microphone sensitive to such oscillations. The recorded material was then converted into frequencies audible to humans.
Afterward, the sound underwent creative processing: I fragmented it into tiny segments lasting up to one-thousandth of a second, altered playback speeds up to a thousandfold in either direction, combined fragments, and experimented with various sound transformations.
No external sounds other than derivatives of the magnetic field recording were used in the track.
The porcelain 3D printer was developed by Vadym (Rheo.DCB).
The magnetic field microphone was designed by Kostiantyn Poveda.
The recording took place in 2024 at the Ostrov scientific-artistic platform in Kyiv, Ukraine.
Concept of sound arrangement:
The composition is based on the pyramidal form of the porcelain sculpture, crafted from a single spiral line. Its structure resembles the vortex of a tornado.
