Briefly about Mykola Verbicki

Painter, Artist, Athlete. Graphic artist, book illustrator, poster artist.

People's Artist of the USSR. (from the source of the publication "Artistic Olympus", there are no other documents on this matter in the family archive)

He worked in a classical manner. Now there are several of his works left in the family collection: a portrait of his son Heorhiy Mykolayovych Verbicki, a portrait of grandson Serhiy Georgyovych Verbicki and a few more. Unfortunately, all other works were lost during the Second World War.

He was born in the family of the abbot of the Greek-Catholic Cathedral, Ioan Vissarionovich Verbicki, who was shot by Chekists (Soviet sercret police) in 1924 in front of his family for sheltering the Jewish community in his house during the Jewish pogroms before or during the revolution.

The family was big. The names of four brothers and three sisters are known, but according to Mykola Ivanovich, there were more of them.

Unfortunately, there is no accurate information about all his brothers and sisters. It is known that Borys Ivanovich Verbicki (1905-1985) is a theater and film actor; Vasyl Ivanovich Verbicki is an opera singer. During the revolution, he left for San Francisco. Volodymyr Ivanovich Verbicki - an officer of the Tsar army, was killed by the Red Army. Yevhen Ivanovich Verbicki was an artist, in 1945 he left for France with his family. There were also: Oleksandra, Elizaveta and Lidia Verbicki. We remember Mykola Verbicki as extremely positive and cheerful. It is known that during his life he saved many people from death by somehow finding himself in the place where help was needed. He rescued people from fires or pulled out and brought back to life those who were drowning. One of those whom he saved was his grandson and my father Serhiy, who almost drowned in childhood. Another interesting fact about him: at the age of 70-80, he was under study at the Institute of Gerontology because his internal organs were in the condition of a young person. The conclusion of the professors is unknown to me:)) At the age of 90, on the day of his death, he visited his children during the family dinner on Easter. He was cheerful, sang a lot, in particular in Greek. (I was three years old, but I remember this evening). After visiting the guests, he and his wife got home, went to sleep and he never woke up again.

Almost all of Mykola Verbicki’s works disappeared during the Second World War. But a few of his works remained in the family collection.
